See the Windfall Offspring Report 2007

General Comments – The most prominent features we have seen in the aggregate of Windfall’s offspring has been their uniformity. They are all dark, no chestnuts, about half black or nearly so. Virtually all are in a fairly narrow range of size, expected to end up between 16 and 17 hands. The similarity of face and expression is quite striking, as is the consistency of seeing his neck and topline in these foals. Most have the same squarish frame and it has been our observation at home that he almost always improves the overall correctness of legs and hooves.

None of our Windfoals have had any illnesses or other health problems and with one exception none have been significantly injured in pasture, a feature we value highly. All have been easily handled by farrier and vet without twitching or tranquillization, and none have been gelded for temperament-improvement reasons.

We know from Germany and here that he does exceptionally well with Thoroughbred and half-Thoroughbred mares, but he does not seem to have any problem creating elegance and refinement with average purebred Trakehner mares, as we have been strongly assured by several outside mare owners and have seen in several examples of our own. A good example is Stacey Ellis’s yearling purebred colt from the mare Fair Well (by Ravel out of a Rockefeller mare)

Because there is a very well-established tendency for the Habicht offspring to produce strong, very similar foals, all of whom seem to be of what is referred to as the Habicht-type, we expect that prepotence to continue in the next few generations with Windfall and his offspring. If things go as they appear to be aimed, his foals will become top riding and competition horses. Yet to be seen is how he will produce with strongly arab-influenced mares and the more distantly related warmblood mares he is beginning to attract. We should know in the next few years.

To follow below, in no particular order, are representative Windfall foals and their owners’ comments about them.

WINDANCER (added October 2007)
2007 Hanoverian filly

Note: This report will be of special interest to Hanoverian mare owners who are considering Windfall (approved AHS elite stallion, approved for Jumper Breeding Program) as a way to improve their breeding program by use of outside blood. It is interesting to note the comments of experts, especially those from Europe as in this case, who look at Windfall foals in other breeds. The words used by the Hanoverian team quoted below are nearly identical to those given about Ann Raish's Swedish Warmblood foal Captain Jack by the Swedish inspector back in 2004, i.e. "This is the type of foal we are trying to produce in this breed." Captain Jack was scored "9" in type as a SWB. Remembering that Windfall is himself only 1/4 "pure" Trakehener blood, one might conclude that he represents something very close to the model of the new type being sought by all European sporthorse breeds, as they all edge closer to what the market is seeking: a medium-framed, elegant riding horse with powerful and correct movement as well as jumper talent and the ability to pass it along.

"Just wanted to let you know that my 2007 Windfall filly, Windancer, out of Andrea Hayden's Hanoverian mare Eclipse TLM was filly champion at the Hanoverian inspection in Florida, August 29, 2007. The inspectors were very complimentary of the filly, the mare, and your stallion. Several times they commented that this was the type of foal that we should all be trying to produce and that she was the perfect example of what you get when breeding a high quality mare to a stallion of Windfall's caliber. In addition to beautiful conformation and movement, she is very people oriented, very level-headed, and very quick to learn. I had very high expectations of this foal when I decided on this breeding and she has exceeded everything I hoped for. Thank you so much Tim, Cheryl, Windfall, Andrea, and Eclipse for the chance to own such a magnificent filly.

NIGHTFALL (added Jan. 15, 2007)

Foaled: 2004
Dam: Ron's Real Linda (JC) by Kid Colin

"Our two year old Windfall colt continues to be outstanding. He is the most trainable colt I have had in 40 years and is the most people-oriented horse on the farm. He plays in water with vigor, enjoying splashy games in the creek and when tired of it he springs from a dead stop to the top of the bank like a pogo stick. He also has his own personal ditch, which he voluntarily jumps about 20 times a day.

"His personality was typified the first time they pulled his very long mane -- most of our young horses and many of the competition horses resent mane pulling. Nightfall is the opposite -- he ENJOYS the process. It was as if he were saying, 'Oh BOY! Look at all the attention I am getting!' "

ZOE ( reg. COVER GIRL)

Windfall foal Zoe is the 4th foal out of our TB mare Cato's Sister, previous foals were purebreds and a Connemara cross. Zoe is our first Trakehner cross and we couldn't be happier. My first impression of the filly was how beautiful her head was and such shapely ears! Then I saw the long legs and huge joints, wow, longer than anything we've ever had here! At 2 months, I had a visiting Cornell vet comment she had never seen a foal with such straight and correct legs at that young an age. Zoe is easy to work with, very intelligent. My husband is a former farrier, so standing properly for trimming is a must. She jumped into the horse trailer first try and learned to hop over cross rails while we exercised her mom. (This is exciting as my daughter plans to event her someday.) To date she has had no health or foot problems, one minor injury so we learned about wrapping and tying. Zoe's out every day - rain, shine or snow with the rest of our horses. Socially she's very well adapted, sweet and friendly.

Zoe's big outing came at the end of summer when she was 4 1/2 months old. We went to the Genesee Valley Breeders Show in Avon, NY. Zoe was the champion foal, champion sporthorse and show grand champion. I knew going into the show we had a really nice filly and of course you always have your hopes up but boy that day we never came down! The judge's comments were "excellent" in every category and she placed Zoe far above the competition that day. And we won a manners and conditon class to boot! One fellow competitor at the show came over and said her best description for Zoe was "Godiva chocolate" - so very smooth! I'd have to agree, she has teriffic balance and symmetry, correctness and big flowing gaits to go along with her good looks and big eye. I was told Windfall was a great cross with a TB mare and I surely was not let down. Windfall is prepotent, his get are stamped with his looks and conformation. My vet recently noted Zoe had a look of her own, I think it's actually the look of Windfall. Would I breed back to Windfall or recommend him to another mare owner? Definitely!

FAIRWIND
Foaled - June 6, 2004
Dam - Fairwell, purebred Trakehner mare by Ravel out Fair Rock by Rockefeller

Fairwind by Windfall“Fairwind is a lovely, smart, people-friendly, dreamy colt. I bred Fairwell to W for more size and substance, and I got it all -- in spades. My vet (who also breeds Trakehners) says "He is perfect in conformation." He really resembles W in body and temperament (and he is black as luck would have it!). Fairwind is a perfect blend of Fairwell and Windfall, he has both of their best traits. He is sweet, easy to manage, and smart.

"I have three Trakehner mares in my barn, and I will only breed to Windfall, because this colt is too cool for school!”

2005 Fairwind Update: This really exceptional colt made quite a splash at the ATA Annual meeting in Conroe, TX, November, 2005. He won the Yearling Colt Class in the National Trakehner Show and was very highly praised as a stallion prospect by the Inspection Team.

CAPTAIN JACK
Foaled - May 6, 2004
Dam – Madeira (04-95-7008), Swedish Warmblood by Absolut out of Pirouette by Bamtung

Captain Jack by Windfall“I think the best brag on Jack is that he obtained premium status at the Swedish inspection and was the only colt not from a Swedish stallion...and got a “9”on type.

Jack is incredibly fast in the field and leads all the others as they make their daily gallops. He is very personable and easy to handle. He is an amazing cross of my beautiful, large mare and Windfall. He has Windfall's size and substance, my mare's gorgeous neck and a mix of heads! He has fabulous conformation, nice feet and a strong backside. He is very bold and always the first of the babies to venture into a new area. He definitely looks like he has the conformation and seems to have the personality of a performance horse. He has Windfall's striking color with a cute star and snip and two white socks.”

KOPILOT
Foaled - April, 2004
Dam - Kolomba (DE 309 090189096), purebred Trakehner by Michelangelo out of Kontressina by Arogno

Kopilot by Windfall“Kopilot came into the world sound, healthy and very well conformed. Her uphill topline with strong withers led us to whisper of a performance future, her legs -- long, lean and flawless -- held her steadily within 13 minutes. The dam is well-built with exceptional movement, however her behind is smallish and her type somewhat lacking feminity. This Windfilly inherited the striking knee action and uphill impulsion from her mother, however the hind-end, topline, connection, long legs, expression and quiet, confident temperament from Windfall. Her feet are large and well-formed. Her coat fine-haired, but thick. Her teeth and bite are correct. An easy keeper, she socializes well with youngsters in her pasture and manages to pick her favorite pile of hay with no challengers, even pushing the older males off theirs. She prefers human company and trots up nickering each time we open the back door. She plays by herself many hours of the day, often rising into 360-degree pirouettes without thought or effort. She is curious and fearless, but shows cautious restraint. She is patient, easy to handle and learns more like an adult horse than a weanling. In the several months since her birth, she has grown into a strikingly feminine beauty, no doubt due to the Arabian influence from Windfall. Her face is heavily dished with a crested brow, her gaze soft and demure. We are very happy to have the best combination of traits from Kolomba and Windfall, and could not have pieced together a better foal in our imaginations. With this Pasteur xx / Habicht cross, we have high hopes for her future in combined training. And surprise, surprise - at eight months old, this filly displays the best type and femininity in our herd. She is unmistakably her father’s daughter.”

FEMME FATALE
Foaled - May 15, 2002
Dam - Fine Art, purebred Trakehner by Abdullah out of Freeda by Tannenberg

Femme Fatale by Windfall“Our Windfoal is super and we love her. This filly really could do anything. She has extremely attractive movement with lots of suspension and elevated movement. She naturally moves from behind with lots of impulsion. She is also very athletic and CAN jump. She could have a career in dressage, eventing or jumping. She has a wonderful, willing temperament and has been just super to work with. We backed her about a month ago and there was not even a hump in her back. She is now walking, trotting, and cantering quietly and smoothly (only 10 minutes every other day). My trainer said that this is one who seems to have come out of the dam "on the bit" as she just naturally goes on the bit and in a proper frame with no fussing or problems at all. He describes her as a "really classy filly." She loves people. She is very sound with excellent feet and is correct. We plan to show her in intro and training level dressage next year and I have no doubt she will do well. This is one that we will have to be careful not to go too fast with as she is so willing to do what you want, can do just about anything, and just goes with the flow. She looks like Windfall to a great degree and I estimate she will mature at around 16.3 hands. This is a truly outstanding filly and if I were younger and not cutting back drastically on breeding I would definitely repeat the breeding.

She is a definite alpha mare but also gets along well and is not overly aggressive. She was shown in-hand one time as a yearling and was high point Trakehner at the Dressage at Delaware sport horse breeding show.”

STELLA Di LUNA
Foaled – May 16, 2003
Dam - Sternlicht, purebred Trakehner mare by Amethyst and out of Sable by Graditz

Stella DiLuna by Windfall“Born during the dark of the total lunar eclipse in the spring of ' 03, Stella di Luna came into the world -- our little "Star of the Moon." She was so very special from the start! Out of the Trakehner mare, Sternlicht by Amethyst, from the female families of Graditz and Luneur, she surely is destined to become the quintessential equine athlete. Her conformation is faultless as is her mind -- very inquisitive, no fear or shyness. Stella is a leader in her group even though she is considerably younger than the other yearlings. The others seem to follow her example when presented with a new situation. She is such a proud Trakehner and frankly, I don't think we could have imagined a more perfect filly. As she matures, we can see so much of Windfall in her. She exudes an unmistakable sense of confidence and class, traits found in both her sire and dam. Thank you Windfall, Sternlicht and The Holekamp Family. Wishing you continued success with this wonderful stallion!”

Janet Huening
Blaufelden Farm, Union, KY

LATEST STELLAGRAM (January, 2007): Stella made her appearance at the annual ATA meeting in Ohio in November, 2006, where she was champion filly in the national mare show and reserve champion of the big Mare inspection for the studbook there. This one is a definite "keeper," but may be for sale. Check with Janet.
